Self-directed learning (SDL)

With self-directed learning (SDL), you can work more flexibly on improving your language skills and thus develop your learner autonomy. If you would like to take more control of your language learning and take more responsibility for your learning, then our SDL courses could be of interest to you.

Forms of Self-directed learning in our SDL offer

  • Open Learning Spaces

You regularly visit a open learning space where you can (further) learn the language according to your needs and current language level. You work independently with the materials recommended in the learning room. The LLC colleagues will advise you in person.

  • Blended-Learning-courses

You register for a blended learning course. The course is a combination of classroom lessons and self-study phases. For example, you work on recommended learning materials independently at home and then practise the content in the classroom.

  • SDL-courses

You register for an SDL course, but are mainly responsible for your own learning in the course. There are no lessons. You learn independently using the materials recommended in the course. You can take advantage of counseling services and participate in group meetings.

  • Tandem offer

When learning languages in tandem, two students with different mother tongues learn together. For example, if you want to improve your knowledge of Spanish, Chinese or Italian, you can work with a person whose mother tongue is Spanish, Chinese or Italian and who wants to learn your mother tongue.

  • Learning counseling

Make an appointment with our colleagues and find the best way to self-directed learning in the target language together.

Dependent on the form of learning you can:

  • set your own learning times; there are usually no weekly attendance times
  • define your own learning goals
  • select your learning materials
  • get to know and try out different learning methods
  • choose your learning mode, i.e. whether you want to work alone, with a partner or in a group
  • determine your learning speed
  • learn independently of the semester
  • earn ECTS points

Conditions for Self-Directed Learning

Since self-directed learning offers a lot of freedom, you need to bring a few things with you if you want to be successful. The following are particularly important

  • a strong inner motivation and clear goals
  • Self-discipline and a good ability to organize yourself
  • good time management and regular time slots for learning
  • the ability to develop and apply effective learning strategies

Do you want to learn a language independently?

  • Here is what you can do:
    • Find out about the SDL courses on offer at the LLC and choose a suitable course
    • Planning: Set yourself specific learning goals and actively pursue them
    • Implementation: Work regularly and motivate yourself with every goal you achieve
    • Evaluation: Evaluate learning phases and reflect on your learning. This will help you to find out what works for you and how you can make your learning as effective as possible
    • Seek advice if you need help
